Blue and white painted houses of Chefchaouen on the hillside

Chefchaouen

The blue-washed town in the Rif mountains that photographs better than anywhere else in the country.

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 and painted blue, depending on who you ask, by Jewish refugees from Andalusia or by the town council to keep the mosquitoes away. Either way the effect is extraordinary at dawn, before the day-trippers arrive. The Spanish Mosque on the hill opposite is the place for sunset, and the Akchour waterfalls are an easy hike away.

We always recommend at least one night here, and two if your schedule allows.
