Alpine-style house among green trees in Ifrane, Middle Atlas

Ifrane & the Middle Atlas

A Swiss-looking town, a cedar forest and the monkeys that live in it, between Fes and the desert.

Ifrane was built by the French in the 1930s as a hill station and still looks like it: red roofs, lawns and a lake. The reason to stop, apart from the surprise, is the cedar forest around Azrou, where Barbary macaques come down to the road and the trees are several centuries old.

Every tour between Fes and Merzouga passes through Ifrane and stops in the forest.
