What to pack for a Morocco desert tour

A desert camp has electricity, hot showers and real beds, so you need less than you think. Here is what actually matters, and what the camp already has.

What the camp provides

Our camps in Erg Chebbi have private tents with proper beds, duvets and blankets, en-suite bathrooms with hot water, towels, electricity in the evening and the morning, and dinner and breakfast. You do not need a sleeping bag, a torch for the tent, or a towel. Bring the things below and leave the big suitcase at your riad in Marrakech; a small bag per person is enough for the desert nights and our driver stores it safely.

Clothes

Layers are the whole secret. Days are warm all year and nights are cold from October to April, so pack light trousers or a long skirt, a couple of t-shirts, a long-sleeved shirt for the sun, and a warm layer (fleece or light down jacket) for the evening around the fire. In winter add a hat and gloves for the sunrise walk. Comfortable closed shoes or trainers for the gorges and the camel ride; sandals or flip-flops for the camp.

A scarf or cheche is the most useful item: against the sun, the wind, and for the photos. Our drivers will show you how to tie it, and you can buy one for a few euros in Rissani or Merzouga.

The small things

  • Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses: the dunes reflect a lot of light
  • A power bank: the camp has electricity, but not all night
  • A small headtorch for the sunrise walk (your phone works too)
  • Wet wipes and a small bottle of hand gel for the road
  • Any medication you take, plus something for motion sickness if you are prone to it (the Dades road winds)
  • Cash in dirhams for lunches, drinks, tips and small purchases: ATMs exist in Ouarzazate and Erfoud, not in the dunes
  • Your camera, a spare battery, and a plastic bag to protect it from sand

What to leave behind

Hair dryers and heavy electronics, high heels, white clothes (the sand wins), and the big suitcase. Drones are illegal to fly in Morocco without a permit and are confiscated at the airport; leave it at home.

If you are travelling with children

Bring their favourite snacks for the car, a tablet with downloaded films for the long day, a warm pyjama for winter nights and a hat they will actually keep on. We bring child seats on request and the camps have family tents with two beds.

Questions about something specific, a medical condition or a dietary need? Tell us when you book and we will adapt the camp, the meals and the pace.
