Marrakech with kids: a family guide from people who live here

Marrakech is one of the most child-friendly cities we know, as long as you plan around the heat, the crowds and the nap. Our team's own tips, with kids of our own.

Vibrant blue villa of Jardin Majorelle surrounded by cacti and palm trees, Marrakech

The city: short walks, long breaks

The medina is exciting for children for about an hour and a half. Do it early with a guide who knows where the quiet alleys are (and where the donkeys and the snake charmers can be seen from a distance), then retreat to a riad with a pool. Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, with the lanterns and the orange juice stalls, is a show in itself; hold hands and keep the visit short.

The gardens are the real family win: the Majorelle Garden early in the morning (cacti, turtles, the blue villa), the Secret Garden with its tower view, and the Menara with the big basin and the Atlas behind. Le Jardin Anima, 30 minutes outside the city, is a sculpture garden children run around for hours.

Day trips that work with children

The Ourika Valley is one hour away and perfect from age 3: a walk to the first waterfall, lunch with your feet in the river, a Berber house with bread baked in the clay oven. The Agafay desert is 40 minutes away and gives children the camel ride and the sunset dinner without the 9-hour drive to Merzouga. Essaouira is three hours away and offers the beach, the boats and camels on the sand; it is a long but easy day from about age 6.

The real Sahara at Merzouga is unforgettable from about age 5, in the 4-day version, with child seats, breaks every hour and a family tent at the camp.

Activities they will talk about for years

A cooking class in a riad: children love rolling the bread and choosing spices in the market. A pottery workshop: they leave with a bowl they made. A hot air balloon flight at sunrise from age 6, with a Berber breakfast after landing. A quad or buggy ride in the Palmeraie for teenagers. Horse riding in Agafay for all ages.

Practical: heat, food, naps

From June to September, plan outdoor activities before 11:00 and after 17:00 and choose a riad or hotel with a pool. Moroccan food is child-friendly: tagine, couscous, grilled chicken, bread and olives, fresh orange juice, pastries. Tap water is treated but most families drink bottled water. Pharmacies are everywhere and well stocked. Taxis do not have child seats; we do, on request, for every transfer and tour.

Tell us the ages of your children and how many days you have, and we will build a week that keeps everyone happy: parents included.
