Essaouira ramparts overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the medina

Essaouira

The windy port town with a white medina, blue boats and the best seafood in Morocco.

Essaouira is the antidote to Marrakech: cooler, slower, by the sea. The medina, designed by a French architect in the 18th century, is a grid rather than a maze; the ramparts face the Atlantic; the port is a working one where you choose your fish and have it grilled on the spot. Surfers, kitesurfers and musicians have made it their home.

It is three hours from Marrakech and appears as a day trip and as a two-night stay on our grand tours.
